Scientific Overview

 After sixty years in practice, the conventional chemotherapy approach, directly targeting tumor cells, has reached its limits, while cancer remains one of the major causes of death in the Western world. A major advancement in cancer research over the past decade has been the realization that tumor growth is determined not only by the genetic makeup of malignant cells but to a large extent by complex interactions with the surrounding healthy tissue. Of utmost importance is the ability of the tumor to recruit blood vessels from the neighboring tissue. Angiogenesis, the process by which new blood vessels are formed, is a hallmark capability of cancer. The fact that all solid tumors rely on aggressive angiogenesis for their growth while active angiogenesis does not takes place in healthy adults, highlights its therapeutic potential. Accordingly, anti-angiogenic therapy aiming to starve the tumor by cutting off its blood supply has emerged as a most promising strategy to inhibit tumor growth and spread.
